Preparing for Your Session
Preparing for your session is as important as the session itself. Make sure you’re in a good mood, iron your best set of clothes, brush your hair and your teeth and just be yourself.Â
Beyond these basics, below you can find further considerations to finesse your experience and getting some great shots.
Wardrobe
What you choose to wear to a headshot session is a personal preference, however, there are some guidelines you should consider.
- Pick casual and formal outfits that make you feel good about yourself and confident.
- Stripes, patterns and logos should be avoided unless used strategically. They distract the eye from the focal point of the photos, you.
- Stay away from anything stark white unless it’s under a blazer, jacket or sweater.Â
- Pick colors that compliment your eyes, hair or skin color. Colors communicate mood, solid colors tend to work best.
- Jewelry will cause reflections, avoid if possible.
- It is important for clothing to look well pressed and be hanged. Make sure all items are ironed and free of wrinkles.
- Loose clothing will project a scruffy appearance. Please ensure your wardrobe is well-fitted.Â
Hair/Make-up
While not everyone agrees, professional hair and make-up can make the difference between a good headshot and a great headshot.
GENTLEMEN:Â
- Haircuts are recommended 2-3 days prior to the session to avoid a prickly fresh cut look.
- Bring a comb or hairbrush to help with fly aways during your session.
- Skin foundation can be used as long as it’s well applied.
LADIES:
- The makeup from a professional make-up artist is not the same as the one you wear daily. Also another benefit is the touch-ups they can provide throughout your session.
- We recommend cosmetic oil-absorbing pads to minimize bright reflections.
- Bring hair accessories necessary to pick up hair or create a pony tail.
Glasses
- If you wear glasses and have a strong prescription, or if you have glasses with no anti-reflection coating, we advise wearing contact lenses or bring a pair of blank frames without lenses if available. The purpose is to avoid any glare from showing up on the glass surface of spectacles.
- Consider removing your glasses during the shoot, if reflections are a consistent problem.
